Soy Wax vs Palm Wax candles and wax melts

Category: Our Business, Thoughts, What's On at Gift Shop Online — Delwyn @ 3:42 pm

dscf0361We are currently looking to expand our range of products at www.giftshoponline.com.au and are very keen to add wax melts and candles.

I have been researching the pros and cons of both Soy Wax and Palm Wax and also different manufacturer’s producing these. I feel that although Palm wax does produce a wonderful pillar candle, the effects to the environment are just too costly for me to promote! Although most sellers of palm wax products will rave on that it is environmentally friendly, they do not bother to inform you of the devastation planting the Palm trees causes. Most of the World’s Palm wax is produced in Malaysia and Borneo, where the Rainforests are being wiped out in order to make room for plantations of Palm.

These Rainforests are home to several unique and endangered animals who’s habitat is being destroyed at a terrible rate in order to provide Palm Wax to the World Market. One of these endangered species is the Orang-utan, who are being killed in vast numbers as they are seen as a “nuisance” to the Palm Wax Industry.

There are claims of Sustainable Palm Wax plantations being started, but I have to wonder if that only gives a false sense that all Palm wax will be “OK”, when really all it will do is encourage a larger demand for the wax and therefore worsen the current situation in Borneo with more Rainforest destruction.

Soy wax is a much better choice, being produced from Soy beans grown by Farmers (on real farms). Soy wax burns clean and does not produce soot or harm the air quality. It can hold a higher percentage of fragrance than the other waxes so will throw a much better scent throughout your home.

We will soon be adding our Soy Wax Melts to the website - these are the blocks which you break off and burn in the top of your oil burner. These Wax Melts have a high percentage of good quality fragrance. Keep an eye on the website www.giftshoponline.com.au or use this form to register your interest for these.

Personal Development from Gandhi

Category: Life Coach — Delwyn @ 2:36 pm

“Be the change that you want to see in the world.”

This quote is taken from Mahatma Gandhi, one of India’s most famous people, and one of the most Inspirational people of the world. Gandhi is known to have inspired great leaders including Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.

Born Mohandas Gandhi in 1869, he was later to become known as Mahatma after becoming a popular leader among his people. (Mahatma meaning “Great Soul” was a title reserved in India for great sages).

This is one of my favourite quotes as it reminds us that we can become anything we wish as long as we keep believing in ourselves. Don’t try to change others, concentrate on yourself and make the changes within. Positive changes will transfer to those around you.

Indian Glass Lanterns

Category: Our Business, What's On at Gift Shop Online — Delwyn @ 12:34 pm

2008_0927lanterns0018We import our glass lanterns directly from India. The business we chose to manufacture our lanterns is run by brothers who have been taught the trade of handmaking these lanterns by their father and grandfather before them. It is a very close knit business and we managed to build a close relationship with the brothers. Their workshop is definately not anything you would see in Australian manufacturing yet everyone there is more than proud of the products they produce.

The lanterns are inspired by ancient Indian architecture, with the decorative detail on the lanterns representing the artistic work of those beautiful buildings.
Whenever I look at one of my lanterns whether I have a candle burning in them or not, they take me away to an ancient mysterious place of magic carpets and majestic temples. (Maybe I have just been watching too many cartoons!)

Our Product of the Month is our hugely popular hexagon based lantern. This lantern can be used as a table centre piece or hung. To view this lantern go to our home page www.giftshoponline.com.au and don’t forget that any purchase of $50 or more during April (excluding postage costs) receives a FREE Indian star shaped lantern!

So lets celebrate Indian Handicraft!

Cheers,
Delwyn

Simple life may be best

Category: Thoughts — Delwyn @ 2:54 pm

I have just seen Slumdog Millionaire and I loved it.
I buy my lanterns from India and have travelled through a few Asian countries, the slums as shown in the movie are so much a part of a lot of Asia.
It is hard to imagine that a lot of the very well dressed people you are dealing with and who are working in the hotels you stay at go home to this lifestyle when they finish work for the day, but they do. I often wonder what they must think when they work in these beautiful hotels waiting around for someone to order a drink, and how on earth they manage to get their whites so white!
But the one thing is they all seem so happy, maybe the simple life really is the best.
